Locked On Ole Miss Hit - Quick Takes on Ole Miss Rebels Football & Basketball

Golding: An Appeal Nobody Ruled On Cost Ole Miss 2 Starters

Episode Summary

Pete Golding explained it himself at Monday's Missouri preview press conference. On Austin Simmons: "You play quarterback, we play one of them. There's an appeal process going on." He couldn't take that risk. On Cayden Lee, Golding said he wasn't comfortable not knowing whether the appeal would go through, didn't want to risk the season on it, and wasn't willing to go through spring to find out. Golding said he understood it, that the meetings were professional, and that both of them know he loves them. He called them players who started at Ole Miss on a playoff football team. The institutional problem is bigger than this roster: the transfer deadline arrives before the ruling does, so a player is asked to bet a season on a decision that hasn't been made yet. Golding did not name whose appeal it was, and this show doesn't either. Segment two is the football problem. Golding said Missouri's pass game goes through Lee — very elusive, an elite route runner, and he has "a really good football intelligence of what we're doing defensively," aware of vacated zones and option routes. Ole Miss has to know where he is on every snap. Golding's answer: there's almost nothing in coverage, front or pressure Ole Miss doesn't already have — "building the buffet" — so the week is about making the same things look different and different things look the same.
