Locked On Ole Miss Hit - Quick Takes on Ole Miss Rebels Football & Basketball

Worst Run Defense In The SEC Meets A Run Game That Can't Run

Episode Summary

Ole Miss is last in the SEC against the run and 127th nationally, giving up about 195 yards a game, and last in the league in scoring defense at just under 31 points allowed. Florida ran for 303 on this defense two weeks ago. Vanderbilt averages 3.3 yards a carry - 108th in the country - and 107 rushing yards a game, 109th. The unstoppable force is 109th. The call: Vanderbilt runs for about 160, well above their average and well below Florida, and it is not enough. Because the reason this defense is 127th is not scheme. Pete Golding gave the number himself in the school's own practice report: 62 missed tackles, 70% of the rushing yards they have allowed. Segment two: Jared Curtis is probable, Blaze Berlowitz started at Georgia, and Golding says he expects to see both - probably at the same time. Everybody assumes Curtis is the problem because Curtis is the better player. Wrong read for this Saturday. Berlowitz followed OC Tim Beck from New Mexico State and his package is option football - counting defenders, direct runs, unbalanced sets. That attacks a defense whose problem is missed tackles and communication after a shift. The honest counterweight: Golding is right to prepare for all three scenarios, and the third - both quarterbacks on the field together - is a look nobody has on tape. Which one scares you more?
